On the 4th of May 2017, last thursday, I visited the university's law library 20 min before its closing time. It was around 6.30pm, as I rushed to get books for my self study. I had looked around for approximately 10min before I found the books and went to the counter to register them. At that point it was about 3min before closing time. I was unable to register them, as the lady at the counter told me she had already switched off the computer, and advised me to come back the next day to take them. I gladly agreed and put the books back. She asked why hadn't I done it earlier in the day, and I told her the I am busy during the day with work, and I have classes from 6pm to 9pm. So I had taken a few min from my class that day to get the books before the library would close. As I walked down to exit the library, another female student comes in. The lady allows her to, even though she had said it was closed. The student goes on to look for her book and when she finds it, the lady allows her to take away. I was completely ashtonished, and after the other student left in a rush, I confronted the lady with what she had just done IN FRONT OF ME. She boldly told me she allowed the other student to take the books because she knows her and did not allow me because she does not know me. I was completely ashtonished as this is a blatant case of discrimination. Bear in mind, I am a student of a different race than both the student and the lady worker. At that moment there was another worker there, a cleaning lady, that heard and saw the confrontation go on. I told her I would make a serious complaint about it, and she once again told me I was free to. Never apologised or said anything that recognised her terrible misconduct. This is a serious case of descrimination, and I am completely at awe that it happened in the faculty of Law, where everyone is supposed to be at least slightly of the heftiness of these allegations to the School. I am sure this will be dealt with urgently. And I am also taken this matter to a higher stance, as a student, I payed just as most of the others did and I should not have to face this kind of discrimination. Books are needed by all students, and all should have fair access to them when they wish. I have proof of what I am stating, as I took pictures of the books and the timing is perfectly recorded. Hope the lady who works at the library is moved to another department where she is able to work fairly and according to the school's law. Kind Regards.
